Downtown visit: September 2026 · Shared in the journal October 13, 2026 · By Al Timberlane
These photographs are from downtown Mountain View just last month. Sasquatch Cave, our neighborhood coffee shop and restaurant, is two storefronts down from us. We love their coffee.
Like KWMV 88.5 FM and the McSpadden Dulcimer Studio, where our radio station resides, Sasquatch Cave is directly across from the Stone County Courthouse. It is a well-known stop here in Mountain View, and when the downtown festivals bring people to the square, plenty of those visitors find their way in for coffee.
The owner was a little shy about having her photograph taken. She and her family have made this shop part of our downtown community, and I’m glad to share a glimpse of their place.
Where the Music Keeps Gathering
In the photograph outside, I am at the courthouse-square gathering place, where generations have come to play music, pick and jam, square dance, and jig dance. This is a historic place, and the music is still part of its everyday life.
Our big downtown festivals bring that tradition into the streets. Fall also brings the Bean Festival, with cauldrons of beans cooking downtown and the outhouse races—another memorable part of Mountain View’s community life.
I wanted to preserve these everyday moments as part of the archive: the coffee, the people, the courthouse square, and the places that welcome musicians and neighbors.
Joe Hart — Founder of KWMV 88.5 FM
The man standing next to the old car is Joe Hart, founder of the station. This family photograph, remembered as his Christmas photograph from around December 25, 2025, belongs with the story of the people behind our radio work.
