4. Imagine Tomorrow, Listen Today

Knock, knock.
Who’s there?
Quality.
Quality who?
Quality of life. Apparently I wasn’t on the discharge list!

Good morning, everybody. I’m Al Timberlane, and this is Good Morning Ozark American Journal™—news and entertainment. This is Part Four of Four of The Heart of Medicine Is the Patient.

That is a dark little joke. The fear behind it is real.

Our family worries that Lori could lose progress that took years to achieve. We remember the wheelchair, the weakness, the difficulty keeping food down, and the search for treatment that helped her function.

We do not want to watch her return to those difficult years without understanding what can be done to prevent it.

For us, quality of life means ordinary things: receiving nourishment, managing symptoms, spending time with family, getting out into the community, and having a meaningful life at home.

Those are the things we hope a care plan will help protect.

When I ask for reassessment, I am asking the team to return to Lori—to listen to what she is experiencing, review the findings, consider her history, and explain whether the current plan is meeting her needs.

What can she tolerate today?

What remains unresolved?

What happens if the plan fails at home?

Who will help?

Those questions deserve room in the conversation.

Our visit has also given us moments of kindness. Artwork to stop and appreciate. Music at the piano. Therapy dogs and volunteer handlers who gave us a reason to smile.

For a little while, there was a dog to pet and a conversation beyond the next medical concern.

I want to preserve those memories, too.

A hospital is made of people. Some investigate. Some teach. Some help a frightened patient through a procedure. Some make a difficult day easier by listening.

Perhaps someday, investments in research like those A. Alfred Taubman supported will help make possible advances we can only imagine today. The futuristic concept artwork accompanying this story offers one storyteller’s vision of that possibility.

Today, medicine still depends on human connections.

The wheel reminds us that each specialty contributes knowledge. The patient brings a lifetime of experience. When a connection breaks, we must recover the history, listen carefully, and reconnect the care.

Some patients leave with remarkable testimonies and stories of recovery. Others continue searching for answers.

Lori T.’s story is still being written.

Our hope remains that she will be heard, that her care will be reassessed as her condition changes, and that the knowledge gathered around her will help her move toward a better life at home.

I respect the contributions represented by the names on these walls. I hope the care of each person inside will fulfill that promise.

And I will keep asking:

What matters most? A name on a wall, or the patient in the bed?

“Imagine tomorrow today. And listen to the patient who needs us today.”
